Organic agriculture is a sustainable form of agriculture, for both ecological and economic reasons. The development trend of Organic Agriculture in world during the past decade shows a positive growth. As an example USA and Canada are having rapidly growing Organic Food market of 20% and Europe is having 7.8% per year.
Among the producer countries Sri Lanka maintains a reputation in organic crop production and exports as defined and specified by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement (IFOAM). It is estimated about 31,585ha or 1.33% of overall agricultural lands in Sri Lanka have so far been committed to organic agriculture practices in the year 2010. It recorded 41,129Mt organic production in the same year (IFOAM & FiBL Statistics). Statistics also highlights the significant increase of organic production from 4216Mt in 2007 to 41,128.3Mt in 2010.
In view of the export potential and positive environmental impacts, Sri Lanka Export Development Board has recognized the sector to be supported as a ‘thrust area’ for attracting foreign exchange to the country.
